Subprojects:

I. Local deixis in the Ibero-romance languages: Spanish, Portuguese of Brazil, Catalan
PD Dr. Konstanze Jungbluth

II. Grammaticalization processes within the limits of Portuguese past tenses
Lars Wigger, M.A.

Aim of the project

Taking into account Bühler's distinction of three aspects of the speaker's origo (ego-hic-nunc) that establishes three different deictical relations: personal deixis - local deixis - temporal deixis, the actual use of the demonstrative pronouns (I) and the past tenses (II) are to be investigated within the two subprojects, synchronically as for the demonstratives (I) and diachronically as for the past tenses (II).

In this respect historical and variational corpora are to be evaluated with regard to internal aspects of language (tenses: semantics of the combined verbs, adverbs, person, co- and subordination; local deixis: semantics of the combined nouns, interplay of person and adverbs of place), combined fields (situation and context, different types of knowledge) as well as mediality (orality/scriptuality) and the traditions of discourse.
