Welcome to our study Picture Processing and Word Detection!

Thank you for your interest in this study. We ask you to carefully read the following information on the study itself and how we will handle your data so that you can make an informed decision whether you want to participate in this study by clicking the button at the end of this page. In this experiment we are aiming to investigate how language proficiency influences picture processing and word detection. We therefore encourage you to take part in this study regardless of your language skills assuming you can understand written task instructions and fully comprehend to what you are agreeing to by participating in this study. If you have any further questions, please contact Alina Palmetshofer (alina.palmetshofer@student.uni-tuebingen.de).

Procedure and Task Description

The experiment takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete and consists of four parts: picture naming, word detection, a questionnaire about yourself and a vocabulary test. Your main tasks will be to name with one word what you see on pictures, to memorize them and to decide if some letter combinations represent real words. Furthermore, we will collect some demographic data about you and test the extent of your vocabulary.

Participation and Anonymity

Participation in our study is voluntarily. You are completely free to choose not to participate or to withdraw from the study at any moment without any negative consequence and without the need to provide any justification. If you cannot complete the experiment or decide to quit the study, no data be saved, but you can still contact us for partial reimbursement. The data collected during the experiment and all personal messages to us will be treated confidentially. Every person working on this project who may see some information related to you signed agreements obligating them to observe data secrecy and maintain confidentiality. If some of the data will ever be used for a scientific publication, the data will be published on a research data repository (e.g. OSF, Zenodo) in a completely anonymized form.

Data Handling

The data will be collected in anonymized form and in no point in time will we ever ask for your name. Furthermore, no computer data such as IP/MAC address or location data will be stored. Your data collected from the experiment will be saved under a combination of numbers on a server hosted by the University for a maximum duration of ten years independently from Prolific. The server is protected with a password and only accessible to the researcher responsible for this study. Due to this complete anonymization we are not able to delete your data after the experiment has been completed by you.
