Information Sheet: The Classifications used in Codii-NPI and CoDII-PPI
The categories of classification are:
following Zwarts (1997).
We define the categories as in van der Wouden (1997):
- NPIs are superstrong if they are licensed only by antimorphic contexts (overt negation).
- NPIs are strong if they are licensed by antimorphic and anti-additive (comprising n-words
and without) contexts.
- NPIs are weak if they are licensed by antimorphic, anti-additive, and downward-entailing
contexts (plus the remaining ones).
- PPIs are superstrong if they are incompatible with downward-entailing, anti-additive and
antimorphic contexts.
- PPIs are strong if they are compatible with downward-entailing contexts but incompatible
with anti-additive and antimorphic ones.
- PPIs are weak if they are compatible with downward-entailing and anti-additive contexts
but incompatible with antimorphic ones.
